Bhubaneswar: The long-pending demand of the residents of Nayapalli for a drain through 120 Infantry Battalion to resolve the issue of flooding during monsoon has been finally heard.

The Centre has accorded permission to Odisha government for construction of the underground drain through the battalion premises, said Bhubaneswar MP Aparajira Sarangi.

Sarangi has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for permission.

Meanwhile, the MP has requested Odisha Chief Secretary to issue appropriate  instructions to Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation for construction of the drain at Nayapalli area at the earliest.

Once constructed, the drain on defence land measuring 0.44 acres or 1770 sqmt at Nayapalli Mouza, would bring relief from waterlogging to 10,000 residents of the are, she stated in the letter.

She had met the Defence Minister in February with the plea of the Nayapalli residents and requested him to grant permission for the drain which would bring relief for the residents from waterlogging.

The area in the capital city remains flooded with rainwater during monsoon and it had faced the worst times in 2018. Vehicles  had got submerged in waist-deep rainwaters in front of ISKON temple here.

The locals had attributed waterlogging menace to water being drained from the temple. They had been demanding for construction of a separate drainage system for Nayapalli, IRC Village, Rental Colony which would pass through the battalion.
