Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police retrieved a video and a few photos from fake doctor Bidhu Prakash Swain alias Ramesh Swain’s mobile phone during the third phase remand, which ended on Tuesday.
In a video, Swain, who was arrested last month for allegedly duping several women across India after marrying them by posing as a senior government official, can be seen crying inconsolably.
Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash said Swain admitted that he used the weeping video to emotionally blackmail his victims.
A native of Odisha’s Kendrapada, Swain targetted highly-educated women working at senior positions at various government and private organizations from various matrimonial published in newspapers.
So far, 15 cases have been registered against him, the DCP said, adding that they would seek the court’s permission to conduct polygraph tests on him.
Around 10 days after taking the 66-year-old conman into custody, police had arrested his stepsister, Rashmita Beura, for allegedly helping him reinforce his identity as a doctor and win the trust of the women and their families. However, brother-in-law Ganesh, his driver Papu and his second wife are still absconding.
