Cuttack: A day after meeting with an accident while riding a motorcycle, popular jatra director Trupti Ranjan Biswal breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Odisha’s Cuttack city on Monday.

A pall of gloom descended on both film and jatra industries after he was declared dead around 10 am.

A native of Mahanga, he was an alumnus of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. He started his career as an assistant to reputed film director Hara Patnaik.

Later, he directed a few popular mega TV soaps, including ‘Ahuti’, ‘Suna Kalash’, ‘Bandhan’, ‘Ahankar’ and ‘Gayatri’. He helmed Odia film ‘Jai Sriram’ (2005), starring Bobby Mishra and Bhojpuri actress Antara Biswas, popularly known as Monalisa. This was the only film he ever directed.

However, Biswal will be remembered more for his stint with jatras, a popular theatre form in Odisha. Some of his successful directorial works are ‘Kemiti Kahibi Emiti Katha’, ‘Anganwadi Didi’, ‘Toh Naa Re Mo Naa Ku Deichi Jodi’, ‘Ete Sari Tote Kiye Kala’ and ‘Michua Radhua Gapa Sarila’.
