Jajpur: A jilted lover allegedly hacked his girlfriend’s brother to death near Tarini Chhak under Kaliapani police limits in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Tuesday night.
The deceased has been identified as Jitendra Mahapatra.
According to sources, the accused, Santanu Samal, was in an extramarital affair with Jitendra’s sister and wanted to marry her.
However, the woman’s family opposed the marriage. Her father, Santosh Mahapatra, had allegedly set a condition and asked Santanu to divorce his first wife and keep Rs 10 lakh in his daughter’s account.
Santanu had also threatened to kill Santosh over this condition in the past, sources said.
In an enraged state of mind, Santanu hacked the father-son duo late on Tuesday night while they were returning home. They were rushed to Community Health Centre (CHC), Sukinda, where the doctors declared Jitendra brought dead. Meanwhile, Santosh is still critical.
Following this, the irate locals torched the house and truck of the accused as well as staged a road blockade on Wednesday morning demanding strict action against him.
On getting the information, Kaliapani police arrived to appease the locals but failed. Santanu has been detained for questioning.
