Bhubaneswar/Cuttack: Prices of vegetables usually skyrocket during the Odia calendar month of Kartika when many families give up non-vegetarian food.

The prices of most vegetables have shot up in Bhubaneswar. Incessant rain, and rise in petrol and diesel prices are the reasons driving the price rise.

Like Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, vegetable prices are also high in many districts of Odisha.

However, there is a slight fall in the prices, in comparison to last month.

Vegetables prices are between Rs 50 and Rs 70 on Thursday, informed a vegetable seller of Unit-I market in Bhubaneswar.

Prices will continue to rise till Kartika Purnima. If Odisha and the states, from where vegetables is imported, will experience rain in the coming days, then prices of vegetables will rise again, he added.

Vegetable prices in Bhubaneswar

Potato is available at Rs 20 per kg, whereas price of onion is Rs 45 per kg.

Cucumber is available for Rs 30 to Rs 50 per kg, brinjal Rs 50 to Rs 80, capsicum Rs 50 to Rs 60, beans Rs 50, and carrot Rs 40.

Bitter gourd is selling at Rs 60 per kg, tomato Rs 40 to Rs 60 and pointed gourd Rs 40 to Rs 50.

Prices of vegetables at Chhatra Bazar in Cuttack are also high. Most of the green vegetables are available above Rs 50 per kg.

“Due to rain in Odisha and in other states, vegetables were damaged in the field. Now, demand for vegetables is higher than supply. That is why, prices are also high. However, after Kartika Purnima, there is a chance of prices falling,” said Cuttack Byabasayee Sangh Secretary Debendra Sahoo.

These prices will be constant if there is no rain. Otherwise, new vegetables in the farmland will be damaged and price will soar again, he added.
