Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to receive its first monsoon showers during the three-day Raja festival with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting the onset in south Odisha by June 15 or 16.
“Conditions would continue to become favourable for further advance of monsoon into some more parts of north Arabian Sea, Gujarat state, some parts of Marathwada, some more parts of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, most parts of Bay of Bengal, entire Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, some parts of Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar during the subsequent 3 days,” the MeT office said on Sunday.
Till the arrival of monsoon, light to moderate rain would continue mostly in south Odisha and adjoining coastal pockets. The state will also witness a dip in the maximum temperature by 3 to 4 degree Celsius after 2 to 3 days. The daytime temperature will remain above normal by 2-3 degree Celsius at many places during the next 2 days, the IMD said in its mid-day bulletin.
Rainfall activity is likely to increase in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds between June 14 and June 16, it added.
“The pre-monsoon shower activity commenced from Saturday and conditions are favourable for advancement of the monsoon towards Odisha as the westerly winds have weakened and there is moisture availability in the state,” said Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre scientist, Umasankar Das.
