Bhubaneswar: Police on Monday arrested a person from Odisha for allegedly smuggling ganja to Noida and seized nearly 3.5 quintal of contraband from his possession.
Speaking to media persons, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida) Anil Kumar Yadav said following reliable information about transportation of ganja, officials of the Narcotics Cell and personnel from the local police station carried out an operation on Sunday night.
The team intercepted two cars and found the ganja during checking. The contraband was being smuggled from Andhra Pradesh to North Capital Region (NCR). One of the two drivers of the cars managed to escape.
The other driver, who was arrested, was identified as Indrajeet Senapati from Odisha while his accomplice is Paritosh of West Bengal and is staying in Noida, the DCP said.
“The gang was on police radar for the last two to four months. On the basis of inputs and interceptions, we caught the duo with a large consignment near Jaypee underpass while they were transporting the cannabis,” Yadav said.
Police recovered around 2.45 quintals of cannabis from the two cars. On the basis of the information provided by Senapati during the interrogation, police searched a godown where around one more quintal of contraband was seized. The cost of the seized ganja was estimated to be Rs 42 lakh in the black market.
The two cars, used by the smugglers to smuggle the cannabis, have also been impounded, he added.
