Bhubaneswar: While the well-marked low pressure area has moved to East Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood, heavy rain may continue to lash some districts in Odisha on Friday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow warning of heavy rainfall for one or two places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts.

Though light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely at a few places across the state, there is no weather warning for the subsequent two days. Heavy rain, however, is likely to resume on September 18 with yellow warning issued for Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts. Light to moderate rain or thundershower may also occur at many places in coastal, southern and interior districts of Odisha and at a few places in remaining parts of the state.

On September 19, heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi. Light to moderate rain or thundershower may also occur at most places in South Odisha and at many places in North Odisha, the weather agency said, adding that there will be little change in the weather conditions in the subsequent two days.

IMD, Bhubaneswar, scientist Umashankar Das had also told the media that the intensity of rain is likely to increase in the state from September 19.

According to North Indian Ocean Extended Range Outlook for Cyclogenesis issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday, another cyclonic circulation is likely to form over eastcentral Bay of Bengal next week with west-northwestwards movement towards North Bay of Bengal.

“There is also a likelihood of formation of another cyclonic circulation over eastcentral Bay of Bengal during later part of week 1 (September 15-21) with west-northwestwards movement towards North Bay of Bengal in the beginning of week 2 (September 22-28).”

Notably, Odisha received 110.5 mm rainfall in the last four days under the influence of a low pressure over Bay of Bengal, which is 231% more than the normal of 33.4 mm. While 18 districts received excessive rainfall during this period, Mayurbhanj and Balasore recorded excess rain.

This wet spell has helped to make up for the shortfall in rain this monsoon season. The state has recorded 1002.3 mm rainfall against the normal of 1051.3 mm between June 1 and September 15. While two districts received excess rainfall, 25 are in normal category and only 3 deficient.
