Odisha Registers Over 65% Rise In Criminal Cases In 5 Years

Bhubaneswar: The criminal cases in Odisha increased by more than 65% in the last 5 years, according to the data provided by Minister of State for Home Tusharkanti Behera in the Assembly on Monday.

The minister stated this while replying to a starred question of BJP MLA from Sundargarh Kusum Tete. The MLA had asked how many criminal cases were registered in the police stations across the state and when was the health check-up of the police personnel was conducted last time.

The minister, in his reply, said total 1,07,408 cases were registered in the police stations in 2018, 1,21,525 in 2019, 1,34,230 in 2020, 1,55,420 in 2021 and 1,78,190 in 2022. Between 2018 and 2022, the criminal cases increased by 70,782, registering 65.42% rise.

Giving details of the criminal cases registered in 2022, the minister said those included 1379 cases related to murder, 626 dacoity, 2998 robbery, 5467 burglary, 14893 theft, 5352 swindling, 2248 rioting, 3184 rape, 11663 vehicle accident and 1,30,380 miscellaneous.

He further said in these 5 years, maximum 1,470 murder cases were filed in 2020, maximum 626 dacoity cases in 2022 and highest 3,327 rape cases in 2021.
