Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to adopt the Gujarat model to check pachyderm deaths on rail tracks.

At least 28 elephants have been killed in train mishaps in the last 10 years.

A meeting in this regard was held on Friday between the State Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department and Gujarat based-NGO Ear to the Wildlife Foundation.

Talking to mediapersons after the meeting, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Wildlife, Sashi Paul said that the NGO members made a video presentation to save the pachyderms.

“As per the blueprint prepared by the NGO, an automatic signal will be sent to the up and down lines with sirens as soon as a sensor identifies the presence of the elephants on the tracks. This will help the loco driver to reduce the speed of the train,” Paul said.

Maintaining the new model will be very effective, he said that it will be implemented soon.
