Odisha’s ‘Kandhamal Haladi’ Wins National IP Award

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s ‘Kandhamal Haladi’ has won the National Intellectual Property Award  for 2021-22.

According to sources, it was the most liked geographical indication in ‘Agriculture’ under GI Category.

Besides ‘Kandhamal Haldi’, four other items from different states also received the award on Saturday.

• Agriculture- Kandhamal Haladi (Odisha)
• Food Stuff- Hyderabad Haleem(Telangana)
• Handicraft- Thanjavur Art Plate(Tamil Nadu)
• Manufactured- Mysore Sandal Soap(Karnataka)
• Natural- Chunar Balua Patthar(Uttar Pradesh)

Notably, Kandhamal turmeric and Koraput ginger have been identified as potential commodities for the development of value chains with a focus on outreach to Germany and other European Union (EU) markets.

It is pertinent to mention here that  Kandhamal Haladi, a variety of turmeric indigenous to South Odisha and mostly cultivated in Kandhamal district, was awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag on the occasion of Utkal Divas on April 1, 2019.

Kandhamal Apex Spices Association for Marketing (KASAM), a registered society involved in processing and value addition along with marketing of spices and other products, filed an application for a GI tag for this spice on January 11, 2018. The proposal was accepted under sub-section (1) of Section 13 of the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
