Sambalpur: The authorities of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMSAR) at Burla have decided to dedicate 30 beds for treating murcomycosis (black fungus) patients.
According to the VIMSAR Director, Dr Lalit Meher, 10 beds each will be reserved at the ENT, opthalomology and medicine departments.
The provision of beds at different departments will help the doctors to provide multidisciplinary treatment to the black fungus patients, Meher said.
He informed that at present, 10 patients afflicted with the disease are undergoing treatment at the hospital’s ENT wing and their condition is stable.
The Superintendent of VIMSAR, Dr Lal Mohan Nayak, said black fungus patients generally show symptoms of nasal, ophthalmic tract and medicinal complications.
He added that most of the black fungus patients are also infected with severe immune suppression.
Nayak further said the hospital is facing shortage of Amphotercin-B injection, which is a life saving drug for patients diagnosed with black fungus. “We have asked the government for supplying the injection at the earliest. We are hoping to receive adequate supply by next week,” he added.
However, there have been no reports of any casualty due to shortage of the life saving injection so far.
VIMSAR sources said the hospital had received 70 injections of Amphotercin-B, but all were administered to patients.
