New Delhi: Delhi Police’s cyber crime of Delhi Police on Monday unearthed an online Ola electric scooty scam in which over 1,000 people have been duped across India.

Sixteen people have been arrested from different parts of the country, including Bengaluru, Gurugram and Patna, DCP (Outer North) Devesh Mahla was quoted as saying by ANI.

One of the victims registered a police complaint regarding an online scooty fraud on October 7. The cyber cell then got cracking and managed to nab the fraudsters.

According to police, two people in Bengaluru designed a fake website for Ola electric scooters, reported Hindustan Times. As soon as people uploaded their details on the website, the duo shared victims’ mobile numbers and other details with gang members in other states.

The victims were asked to transfer Rs 60,000 to Rs 70,000 for insurance and transportation charges of the scooty.

“We busted the call centre running the scam in Patna and arrested 16 people. 114 SIM cards, over 60 mobile phones, and seven laptops have been seized and 25 bank accounts with over Rs 5 crore transactions have been traced. At least 1,000 victims are connected with the scam,” the DCP said.
