As one of the key actions aimed at tackling the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in the country, the United Kingdom (UK) health authorities have announced that bookings for the COVID-19 booster vaccines for everyone over the age 30 would begin in England on Monday.
The step comes as an early analysis shows booster jabs are effective against the Omicron variant, the first cases of which are being hospitalised now, News18 reported quoting news agency PTI.
There is no death from the variant in the UK as yet but experts warn that it is set to take over Delta as the dominant virus variant by the end of this year.
“It is now a race between the booster and that protection and the Omicron variant,” UK Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi was quoted as saying. “We are over 20 million (booster jabs) already. We are now in a race to get all adults who are eligible for their booster to be boostered as quickly as possible,” he said.
