Bhubaneswar: Police have finally arrested one of the key conspirators in the train burning case at Godhra in Gujarat in 2002.
Police claimed that arrested accused Rafiq Hussain Bhatuk (51) was part of the ‘core group’ involved in the conspiracy that led a mob to torch a coach of Sabarmati Express at Godhra station in Panchmahal district of Gujarat on February 27, 2002. As many as 59 ‘Kar Sevaks’ were charred to death in the incident, according to a news agency.
The police made the arrest following information about Bhatuk’s presence in a house in Signal Falia area on Sunday night. He has been charged with hatching a conspiracy and inciting a mob to set the train compartment on fire.
Following investigation into the case, as Bhatuk’s involvement came to light, he fled to Delhi. Three other accused, Salim Ibrahim Badam alias Salim Panwala, Shaukat Charkha and Abdulmajid Yousuf Mitha, are still absconding.
