Puri: One person died while another was critically injured after the motorcycle, which they were riding, crashed into culvert at Khandiagiri village on Pipili-Dandamukundapur road in Odisha’s Puri district late on Tuesday, due to low visibility caused by a heavy fog.
The accident took place when the biker were on their way to Puri from Bhubaneswar.
Sources said that bikers were speeding and were thrown 30 feet away under the impact of the collision. Locals rushed to the spot on hearing the loud noise and informed Fire Service personnel, who could spot only one person at the spot in the pitch dark foggy night and rushed him to a health centre at Pipili. He was later shifted to Bhubaneswar and then to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for further treatment.
This morning, locals found a body on the roadside and it was presumed that he was on the bike, which met with the accident last night. The Adhaar card recovered from his pocket revealed that he was from Bania area in Nayagarh and worked as a labourer at Puri Heritage Project site. Though the identity of the other victim is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that he belonged to Puri since the motorcycle was registered in the district.
On being informed, police reached the spot and initiated an investigation.
Notably, a thick blanket of fog had engulfed several districts of Odisha in the last 24 hours, reducing visibility to 20 metres at some places.
