New Delhi: Former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu surrendered before the Patiala court on Friday. A day earlier, he was sentenced to a one-year jail term in a 1988 road rage case by Supreme Court.

Sidhu reached the district court accompanied by some party leaders including Navtej Singh Cheema, who drove the cricketer-turned politician to the court in an SUV, reported PTI.

Earlier today, Sidhu had sought more time from Supreme Court to surrender, saying he had some medical issues to settle. But he wasn’t granted any immediate relief with Justice Khanwilkar asking him to file a formal application and make the request before CJI N V Ramana.

“File a formal application… and mention before the Chief Justice’s court, then we will see,” the apex court mentioned.

Sidhu, who played 51 Tests and 136 ODIs for India between 1983 and 1999, was then left with no option but to turn himself in.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court modified his punishment to a year’s rigorous imprisonment four years after Sidhu had been let off with a fine of Rs 1,000 in the 1988 case which involved the death of a 65-year-old man.
