Deogarh: Deogarh police on Sunday arrested the operational manager of a private bank for allegedly stealing Rs 18 lakh from the fixed deposit of a customer on the pretext of a loan.
The accused was identified Prabesh Chandra Dash, who was working as an Operations Manager with Axis Bank in Deogarh.
“We received a complaint from Krushna Chandra Mahakul in his matter. In course of investigation it was ascertained that the bank manager had defrauded the customer by developing good relations with him,” Debagarh SDPO Soumya Ranjan Mallick said.
Dash was arrested from Airfield area of Bhubaneswar and produced in a court here this morning, the SDPO added.
According to police, Mahakul, a retired WESCO employee, had two fixed deposits amounting to Rs 15 lakh and Rs 9 lakh in the bank. When he wanted to withdraw the money for his daughter’s wedding in November 2023, Mahakul realised that there was a loan of Rs 18 lakh in his name against these fixed deposits.
“We shared a good rapport and I had given him (bank manager) my mobile phone on a couple of occasions for banking transactions. It was during this period he used my phone to avail the loan. After realising of being duped, I filed a police complaint against the manager,” Mahakul said.
