Bhubaneswar: Nor’wester rain with hailstorm and gusty wind is likely to lash Odisha on March 19-20, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.
According to the midday bulletin, moderate thunderstorm activity with lightning, gusty surface winds, hail and heavy rainfall is expected during March 18-20 due to likely interaction of middle tropospheric westerly trough with lower level moisture laden winds from Bay of Bengal and a trough running from Jharkhand to north Coastal Andhra Pradesh across Odisha.
This will help bring down the day temperature in the state further by 3-5 degree Celsius.
The weather agency has issued yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph for one or two places in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Dhenkanal till 8.30 am on Tuesday. Thunderstorm with lightning may also occur at one or two places in Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sonepur, and Boudh.
Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is also likely at many places in north interior Odisha, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Cuttack and at a few places in remaining districts of Odisha.
The weather agency has issued orange warning of thunderstorm with lightning, gusty surface wind speed and heavy rainfall on March 19-20.
MARCH 19
Orange Warning
Thunderstorm with lightning, and gusty surface wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph and hail may occur at one or two places in Balangir, Sonepur, Kalahandi, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Jajpur districts.
Thunderstorm with lightning and heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm) is also likely at one or two places in Cuttack, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Khurda, and Dhenkanal districts.
Yellow Warning
Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Deogarh and thunderstorm with lightning at one or two places in remaining districts.
MARCH 20
Orange Warning
Thunderstorm with lightning, and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may occur at one or two places in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Puri, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput.
Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm) is also likely at one or two places in Ganjam, Puri, Rayagada, Koraput and Gajapati districts.
Yellow Warning
Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, and Keonjhar districts.
People have been advised to keep a watch on weather and take shelter at safe places during thunderstorm activity to protect from themselves from lightning strikes. Harvesting of Rabi crops may be regulated judicially and farmers have been advised to use hail nets to protect vegetables and crops.

Though there are no further warning, light to moderate rain may continue at some places in the state during the next two days, it added.
