Rourkela: More than 100 kg of ice-cream in an illegally running unit was destroyed during a raid in Odisha’s Rourkela on Thursday.
According to sources in the Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC), the Rainbow Ice Cream Factory was producing ice-cream without licence for the last two years without maintaining hygiene.
The RMC had earlier issued warning to the unit several times about not having necessary permission to produce ice-cream which posed threat to the public health. But the factory ignored those and did not take any steps for improving the unhygienic conditions.
A team of RMC along with food officials conducted the raid on the factory and checked the ingredients, equipment and appliances. “It was found during the raid that the packets of the ice-cream did not have manufacture and expiry date nor batch number. We also found the license number on the packets to be fake,” said food officer Swagatika Behera.
Following the findings, they destroyed over 100 kg of the ice-cream stocked in its cold storage. They also sealed the unit on the instruction of ADM, she said.
Confirming the raid, RMC assistant commissioner Ajit Patnaik said the ice-cream factory had been sealed to prevent any harm to public health.
