Karachi: A website has been launched by a forum of editors and news directors in Pakistan to check the Imran Khan-headed government’s crackdown against the media.

Editors for Safety (EFS) group, in collaboration with Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), recently launched the Pakistan Journalists Memorial website at Karachi Press Club, The Dawn reported.

EFS comprises representatives of a large number of newspapers, TV channels and online news portals that focuses on issues related to violence and threats of violence against the media in Pakistan.

The move follows the arrest of about 25 journalists in recent months.

According to senior journalist Ghazala Fasih, 76 journalists have been murdered in Pakistan since 2002, as per figures shared by PPF.

There have been several reports of the government suppressing free speech in digital spaces.

The Media Matters for Democracy (MMfD) report of 2020 states that Pakistan was found wanting in all the indicators that determine free speech. The report also said that COVID-19 pandemic worsened digital censorship in Pakistan.
