New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government told Parliament on Friday that petrol costs Rs 34.04 a litre before taxes and dealer’s commission are added to it. Diesel, similarly, costs Rs 38.67 per litre.

Amid uproar by the Opposition, seeking an explanation for the spiraling fuel prices despite a fall in international crude oil prices, Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, stated that taxes and dealer commissions stand at 96.9 per cent for petrol and 60.3 per cent for diesel.

It was practically not possible to scrap 100 per cent tax and dealer’s commission, he added.

Meanwhile, international crude oil fell to 55 USD a barrel and fuel prices in the country were cut on Friday. Retail price of petrol now stands at Rs 69.41 per litre in Bhubaneswar and diesel at Rs 68.98 per litre.
