Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate Police on Thursday arrested a deputy chief engineer of East Coast Railway (ECoR) for allegedly duping two youths of lakhs of rupees on the plea of providing them jobs in the Railways.
According to police sources, Santosh Raut and one of his friends of Raghunathpur under Nandankanan police station in the city had approached the deputy chief engineer of ECoR, Prashant Kumar Bag, in 2019 for jobs in the Railways.
The Railway engineer demanded Rs 2 lakh each from Santosh and his friend for the jobs and the latter paid him the amount in two separate cheques. Bag told them that it would take some time to issue appointment letters due to COVID situation.
As Santosh and his friend did not get any appointment for a long time, they asked Bag to return the money. Though Bag gave them a cheque of Rs 4 lakh, it bounced in the bank.
Thereafter, Santosh and his friend could not contact Nag despite their persistent efforts. They also went to his house at Jagannath Bihar in the city and native place in Badachana of Jajpur district but could not trace him.
However, they spotted Bag near Nalco Square on Thursday and handed him over to the police. On the basis of the complaint filed by Santosh and his friend, Chandrasekharpur Police has filed a case and arrested Bag on fraud charges.
Earlier, Bag was arrested for such frauds and duped about 18 people in Raghunathpur of lakhs of rupees, the sources said.
