Jeypore: An exchange of fire took place between police and criminals at Jeypore town in Odisha’s Koraput district late on Monday. However, no one was hurt.
Talking to mediapersons on Tuesday, IIC of Jeypore Town police station Baleswar Gidhi said the PCR team was on a night patrol in the town on Monday night when it spotted a van escorted by two youths on a motorcycle at Glocal Hospital near the bypass road. Seeing the PCR van, the two youths and the vehicle tried to speed away.
As police tried to intercept the vehicle, the two youths opened fire on the them to which the latter retaliated with three rounds of firing. Though police tried to chase them, the youths and the vehicle managed to escape towards Jayanagar using the bypass road.
The IIC said that one empty 9mm cartridge was seized from the spot.
The incident took place between 3 am and 3.30 am.
Preliminary investigation revealed that ganja was being carried in the vehicle.
Meanwhile, a special team formed by the IIC has begun conducting raids in nearby villages of the town along with Sadar Police to track down the criminals.
Notably, the Town police had intensified night patrolling in Jeypore following reports of illegal transportation of ganja.
