Jajpur: Special Task Force and local police rescued as many as 155 cows and oxen while being smuggled and detained two persons in this connection in Odisha’s Jajpur.
Acting on a tip-off, the joint police team conducted a raid on Sahapur Hat under Panikoili police limits and intercepted two trucks late Saturday night. During checking, they found 155 cattle including cows, calves and oxen being transported in the vehicles, the police said on Sunday.
The police team also detained two persons identified as Kamar Siyajuddin Khan of Gujidadra village and Mohammed Karim of Kantabania village and seized Rs 34,500 from their possession. They were being questioned in the police station regarding transportation of the cattle without valid document, the police said.
The police have registered a case under several sections of the IPC, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and the Motor Vehicles Act and further investigation is on.
Of the rescued animals, 37 were sent to cattle shed at Vyasanagar and the rest to the Gosala at Chowdwar in Cuttack.
