Balasore: Police rescued the man of Balasore district who was held captive by some miscreants at gunpoint in Kolkata on Wednesday.
According to police, Tapas Kumar Mohanty, a native of Keshpur village under Soro police limits, was working in a canteen in Bengaluru for the last eight years. He had returned home in February last year, but could not go back to Bengaluru due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
On February 28 last, he received a call about a job offer from Kolkata and left for the city. As soon as he arrived in Kolkata, he was kidnapped by some miscreants who kept him as a captive and sent a video clip of abduction to his wife Sukanti.
The video, which showed Tapas held captive with his hands tied to a chair, had gone viral on social media. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs 8 lakh from Sukanti to release him.
As the miscreants threatened to eliminate him if she failed to make the payment, Sukanti transferred Rs 50,000 to their bank account and later lodged a complaint at Soro police station.
Acting on the complaint, Soro Police rushed to Kolkata. With the help of the local police, the conducted a joint raid on a house in 24 Parganas and rescued Tapas on Wednesday.
The kidnappers managed to escape but efforts are on to nab them, police said.
