Puri: Two days ahead of Rath Yatra, police seized brown sugar worth more than Rs 6 lakh and arrested two persons in Odisha’s Puri district on Sunday.
As per reports, the district police had received reliable information about increased activities of brown sugar smugglers in Nimapada. The smugglers were planning to sell the narcotic to visitors from outside the state during the car festival.
While the police had become alert after the information, they got a tip-off regarding the identity of smugglers on Sunday. A team from Nimapada police station along with STF personnel conducted a raid on a house in Rangesana village under the same police station.
During the search in the house, the police seized 55 gram of brown sugar and 4 mobile phones from possession of two persons including a woman. The police arrested the two persons identified as Shantilata Jena and Kanha Bhoi.
Later, the arrested persons were forwarded to court. The cost of the seized brown sugar was estimated to be around Rs 6 lakh, said the police sources.
