New Delhi: All schools in Delhi will again be closed from Friday (December 3) till further orders because of the dangerous air pollution levels in the city.
Environment Minister Gopal Rai made the announcement after the Supreme Court’s criticised the Delhi government’s decision to reopen schools and issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Centre, Delhi and other neighbouring states to take action to control pollution in the National Capital Region.
The Supreme Court is livid with the steps being taken to tackle air pollution in the national capital. So much so that the apex court on Thursday threatened to intervene and appoint someone to administer “your government” unless asked the Centre and Delhi government comes up with a concrete action plan in a day.
“We will take (the matter) up tomorrow morning… Please respond by then. Otherwise don’t force us… We expect serious action. If you can’t, we will do it. If you want an order, we will give you an order. We will appoint someone to administer your government,” Chief Justice of India NV Ramana said while hearing a petition seeking steps to control the pollution.
The three-member bench, also comprising Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant, stated that despite assurances from the Aam Aadmi Party government, in previous hearings, children were going to school while elders were working from home.
Schools were allowed to resume physical classes after being shut for two weeks.
