Houston: A post office in Texas, the second largest state in the US, will be named after Sikh police officer Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal, who was gunned down while on duty in Houston a year ago.
US President Donald Trump signed a legislation whereby the facility of the US Postal Service located at 315 Addicks Howell Road in Houston will be renamed as the Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal Post Office Building, the White House said in a statement.
It’s only the second US post office to be named after an Indian-American, the other one being in Southern California which was in 2006 named after the first Indian-American Congressman Dalip Singh Saund, Financial Express reported.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz described Dhaliwal as a hero and a trailblazer, who has left a profound legacy on the law enforcement community.
Dhaliwal, who was born in India, moved to Houston with his parents.
In 2015, he became the first Sikh American in Texas to be allowed to carry out his duties wearing the turban and with his beard.
