Patna/New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers marching towards the Bihar Assembly to protest against corruption and the government doing away with the domicile requirement for the recruitment of teachers, were stopped on the way. Police used tear gas, ster canons, and batons to prevent them from marching ahead, NDTV reported.

Heavy security had been put in place in the city to prepare for the protest march, which began at Gandhi Maidan. A police officer said some of the protesters threw chilli powder at them, the report added.

The protest is part of a larger allegation of corruption that the BJP has levelled against the Nitish Kumar-led government in the state. BJP’s Samrat Choudhary, leader of the opposition in the Bihar Legislative Council, who was part of the protest march, was quoted as saying, “Nitish Kumar, you can lathicharge all you like, but I will continue to fight against you. The lathicharge is being done by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s goons.”
