Protests In Kolkata: Opposition ‘Trying A Bangladesh’ To Wrest Power, Claims Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: With protests spiralling against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, and the Opposition calling for the head of West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee hit back with a Bangladesh analogy.

Defending her government’s actions against the accused and reiterating her demand of maximum punishment for the culprit, Mamata claimed that Opposition parties want to “wrest power” from her by organising a “Bangladesh-like movement” in West Bengal.

“CPI(M), BJP are trying to organise Bangladesh-like protests to capture power in West Bengal,” Mamata said.

The reference was to Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina, who was forced to resign as prime minister and flee to India nine days ago following a month-long student-led uprising against her.

Mamata said despite taking “all actions” in the case, her administration was being subjected to a “malicious campaign.”

“Abuse me, but don’t abuse West Bengal,” she said.

The CM requested agitating doctors to resume their duties.

“You must now return to work. My government will extend all support to the CBI… we too want it to be solved quickly,” the supremo of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) stated.
