Puri: The rape of a minor girl in the town will be tagged as a red flag case and the court requested to take a decision on the matter as soon as possible, said Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh on Thursday.
Speaking to media persons, here, Singh said the accused in the rape, committed under Puri Town police limits on Sunday, was arrested from Kurki near Pipili on Puri-Bhubaneswar late on Wednesday.
“Four teams were constituted to launch a manhunt to nab the accused identified as Mahesh Mohanty from Jagatsinghpur district. He has criminal antecedents and was recently released from jail. After the search teams conducted raids at several places, they found Mahesh at Kurki,” the SP said.
He, however, refused to divulge details of the raids and how he was tracked down.
Singh further said the accused will be sent for medical examination soon and the police will file the chargesheet within 20 days. They will also appeal to the court to decide the case and announce its verdict as soon as possible, he added.
Mahesh, a driver staying as neighbour of the victim’s family, allegedly took the girl to the terrace of her house at Sidha Bakula lane and raped her. As the girl screamed in pain, her mother rushed to the terrace and the accused fled.
The girl was rushed to the Puri district headquarters hospital where her medical examination was conducted. Later, she was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as her condition deteriorated.
The condition of the girl was stable following treatment at the hospital, the SP added.
