Puri: A defective axle of Nandighosha, the chariot of Lord Jagannath, has been replaced and two new wheels fitted.
The defect in the axle was detected on Thursday and Biswakarmas tried to repair it with iron clamps. But an inspection team comprising engineers of the state Works Department had suggested replacing it after a thorough check.
Bijay Mahapatra, Biswakarma of Nandighosha, said that the construction of chariots was at least four days ahead of schedule, so there was nothing to worry.
Nandighosha has eight axles with 16 wheels, Taladhwaja seven axles with 14 wheels and Darpadalan six axles with 12 wheels.
Meanwhile, East Coast Railway engineers who operate heavy jacks during the Rath Yatra to turn the chariots visited the construction site and earmarked the spots to fix the jacks.
