Mumbai: Rakhi Sawant said on Sunday she will be contesting the next elections.
The dancer, model and actress quipped that if Narendra Modi could become India’s Prime Minister, there is no reason why she cannot become a chief minister after working in Bollywood.
Rakhi’s remarks came in the wake of actor-turned-politician Hema Malini’s recent comment on film stars contesting elections from her constituency, Mathura. Responding to reports on Kangana Ranaut taking the electoral plunge from Mathura, BJP MP Hema had said: “Tomorrow, Rakhi Sawant will also contest elections.”
“This was supposed to be a surprise that I would be contesting elections in 2022, Narendra Modi ji and Amit Shah ji were to have announced it… but I’m so happy today that the dream girl of my heart has made the announcement,” Rakhi is heard saying in a video posted on Instagram by Viral Bhayani.
Rakhi goes to add that she wants to be like Smriti Irani.
“I’ll go on to be the part 2 of Smriti Irani,” Rakhi says, leading to speculation whether she would try her luck in the Gujarat assembly polls later this year.
Rakhi, known for her item numbers, is not new to politics. She launched her own party Rashtriya Aam Party in 2014, but lost in the Lok Sabha election from Mumbai North West constituency. She then Republican Party of India (Athavale).
She hasn’t made it clear whether she will be fighting for BJP this time.
