Bhubaneswar: With an eye on the forthcoming elections, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday slashed the prices of cooking gas by Rs 200 per cylinder for all domestic consumers.
“PM Narendra Modi has decided Rs 200 reduction in the price of domestic LPG cylinders, for all users…this is a gift from the PM to the women of the country on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and Onam,” said Union Minister Anurag Thakur.
He further informed that the government has decided to provide free gas connection to 75 lakh women, taking the total beneficiaries under the Ujjwala scheme to 10.35 crore. These women will get the gas burner, first cooking gas cylinder, and pipe for free, he added.
The Cabinet has also approved an additional subsidy of Rs 200 under this scheme. Now, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries will pay Rs 400 less in total.
A 14.2-kg LPG cylinder currently costs Rs 1,129 in Bhubaneswar and it will be available at Rs 929 from Wednesday. For Ujjwala beneficiaries, the price will be around Rs 729.
