Mumbai: Veteran industrialist and leading philanthropist Ratan Tata has made a fervent plea to his followers on social media – to refrain from asking for the country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna to be conferred on him.
The Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons took to Twitter on Saturday to state that he appreciated the sentiment, but urged those behind such requests to discontinue the campaign.
“Sir Ratan Tata Deserves the highest honour award Bharat Ratna. He is an inspiration for millions,” wrote one user.
Another posted: “Ratan Tata believes today’s generation of entrepreneurs can take India to next level. We confer the country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna for @RNTata2000.”
There were several such ‘recommendations’ from his admirers. So much so that the 83-year-old industrialist, who is known for his philanthropic work in education, medicine, animal care and rural development sectors, had to come out with a ‘humble request.’
“While I appreciate the sentiments expressed by a section of the social media in terms of an award, I would humbly like to request that such campaigns be discontinued. Instead, I consider myself fortunate to be an Indian and to try and contribute to India’s growth and prosperity,” Tata tweeted.
Tata’s novel request won the hearts of netizens and the chorus for Bharat Ratna grew louder especially on Twitter.
