Cuttack: The prestigious Ravenshaw University in Odisha’s Cuttack city has decided to restrict entry of outsiders to the campus after 6 pm.

According to sources, the decision was taken at a meeting of the Proctorial Board in the university on Tuesday. Several aspects of security of the students, particularly those staying in hostels, faculty and staff were elaborately discussed at the meeting.

Following the discussion, several steps were suggested to ensure security and maintain law and order in the campus. As per the decisions, the entry of outsiders to the campus would be regulated after 6 pm. The number of security personnel at the main gate of the university would be strengthened to enforce the restriction. Besides, the log book for the visitors at the main gate would be strictly maintained.

The security personnel would be directed to remain alert and keep close watch in sensitive areas including back side of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Cafeteria, Library and Psychology Department.

It was also decided that outsiders will not be allowed to stay in hostels overnight. Chief Warden has been asked to discuss with the wardens of the hostels in this regard and frame necessary rules and regulations.

It may be noted that the university has been in the news recently after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan suggested to rename. The minister made the suggestion to remove the ‘colonial connection’ of the 156-year-old university.

His proposal triggered a political blame game with his rivals taking potshots at his alleged ‘lack of knowledge of history’. Opposition BJD termed it a political agenda of the saffron party.

“It is a very unfortunate statement given on the pretext of Odisha Asmita. He should have read a little history before doing so,” said BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty.

However, Pradhan said it was his personal opinion and called for a debate on the issue among the academicians, intelligentsia.
