New Delhi: The Centre on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it is open to lifting restrictions on high-speed 4G mobile internet services on a trial basis in select areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

Appearing for the government, Attorney General KK Venugopal said that the 4G ban will be lifted in one district each in Jammu and Kashmir valley after August 15.

However, the 4G ban will not be lifted in any area adjoining the International Border or the Line of Control. The relaxation will be for areas with low intensity of terrorist activities, the AG told the court.

The government will review the situation after two months, the Hindustan Times reported.

The SC was hearing a petition filed by Foundation for Media Professionals, an NGO, seeking contempt proceedings against the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir administration for their failure to comply with the court’s directive to review restrictions on mobile internet speed in the Union Territory.

High-speed internet service in Jammu and Kashmir has been suspended ever since the Centre scrapped Article 370 in August last year.
