Bhubaneswar: A record number of over 12 lakh migratory birds have been spotted during the annual bird census in Chilika Lake in the state.
According to Forest department sources, 21 teams of the department and surveyors from other related institutions started the count in the lake on Tuesday morning.
The surveyors spotted 12,04,351 migratory birds of 111 species during the census in the lake of international repute and a UNESCO heritage site. This year’s bird population is claimed to be the highest in two decades.
The census was carried out in Satapada of Puri district, Rambha of Ganjam district and Mangalajodi and Balugaon of Khurda district.
