Balangir: A Special Vigilance Court sentenced a retired junior assistant in Odisha government office in Balangir district to rigorous imprisonment in a bribe case on Saturday.
Following a complaint that Manoranjan Nanda, retired junior assistant in the office of SDO, WESCO Utility, Kantabanji in the district was demanding bribe for preparation of revised electricity bill and its processing in his favour, the Vigilance had laid a trap and caught him accepting the bribe.
The Vigilance arrested Nanda and filed the chargesheet against him in the court. The Special Judge, Vigilance, Balangir sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 1 year and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 under Section 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of PC Act, 1988. In default of payment of fine, he has to undergo further rigorous imprisonment for 2 months, the court ordered.
The Court further sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 2 years and imposed fine of Rs 5,000 and in default of payment of fine, to undergo further rigorous imprisonment for 2 months under PC Act, 1988. Both the sentences will run concurrently, the court ruled.
Odisha Vigilance will now move the competent authority for stoppage of pension of Nanda.
