Angul: Tension ran high at Pateli village in Odisha’s Angul district after two persons were crushed to death by a tusker early on Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Shankar Biswal and Jhili Majhi.
According to sources, the tusker has been creating havoc in the area for the last few days. It attacked 42-year-old Jhili in front of her house, killing her on the spot. Shankar (62), who had gone to a nearby canal, was its next victim. One Akshaya Nayak of nearby Saharaguda village also sustained critical injuries in the elephant attack. He has been admitted to the district headquarters hospital.
Following the deaths, irate locals blocked Angul-Bantala road by burning tyres. They demanded Rs 20 lakh compensation and government job to each of the bereaved families, and immediate measures to stop such attacks. Several vehicles remained stranded following the protest. On being informed, police reached the spot and tried to pacify them.
