Bhubaneswar: The Crime Branch on Friday detained seven persons in the alleged assault of an Army captain and his fiancée following a road rage in Bhubaneswar late on September 14.

According to sources, they have been detained on the basis of CCTV footage and are being interrogated at Chandaka police station.

This came a day after Odisha DGP ordered for registration of a case in connection with the incident. “The original case involving the scuffle and road rage for which the couple had visited the Bharatpur police station is also investigated by the Crime Branch. CCTV footage of the area is being verified. The accused would be identified and arrested soon,” DGP Y B Khurania had said.

The Army officer and his fiancée had gone to Bharatpur police station to report the matter which then allegedly led to a series of ‘unpleasant’ events and custodial torture of the couple, triggering a nation-wide furore.

In his complaint to Additional DG of Police, CID Crime Branch, Arun Bothra, Captain Gurvansh Singh Gosal mentioned that 10 to 12 men came in three cars and intercepted his vehicle near Patharagadia. The hooligans allegedly hurled abuses and passed lewd remarks at his fiancée. “They scuffled with us, assaulted me and threatened us with dire consequences,” he wrote.

The Army officer had also noted down the registration number of one of the cars.
