Rourkela: Rourkela police have rescued a 19-year-old girl, who was allegedly held captive there to be forcibly married off to an elderly man, from Amritsar.
Police sources said that the girl along with her sister and two minors, residing under Plant site PS, were sent to Amritsar in Punjab. They were sent to the place by one elderly relative who convinced their mother on the matter.
After reaching Amritsar, the girl was, however, forced to do household chores and virtually held in captivity. She could later guess that her marriage was being fixed with an elderly man without her consent.
She somehow managed to contact her mother and narrated her ordeal. Her mother then contacted Rourkela police, seeking help to rescue her.
Rourkela SP Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo said a team quickly swung into action to rescue the girl along with the minors.
Amritsar police provided help and cooperation to conduct the operation, he added.
