Rourkela: A 5 tonne per day capacity bio-methanation-cum-electricity generation plant will be set up at Balughat, near Sector-14. A decision in this regard was taken by Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) after the civic body authorities found it a challenge to shift hundreds of cattle sheds out of the city limits.
The challenge gave rise to the idea of making better use of cattle dung. The Corporation plans envisages to treat biodegradable organic waste like cattle dung to generate power and manure.
The work towards achieving this goal started in December 2021 when tenders were invited for setting up the facility on a turn-key basis with conditions for operation and maintenance of five years.
Estimated at Rs 4 crore, the proposed plant would be capable to process segregated Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and other bio-waste including cattle dung, vegetable, fruit, flower and other wastes.
The plant is likely to generate 430-450 cubic meter biogas per day, said RMC Commissioner Subhankar Mohapatra and added that the project would help the city get rid of dung for a clean environment, while simultaneously generating power and organic manure.
