Bhadrak: The authorities of Dhamra Port Company Limited (DPCL) on Wednesday announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh each to the next of kin of the three labourers, who died after a heap of coal caved in on the port premises in Bhadrak district the previous day.
A decision in this regard was taken after a meeting of district collector, SP and labour department and port officials was convened this afternoon on the direction of labour minister Sushant Singh. One member of each of the deceased family will also be provided job. The company also announced to bear the entire education expenses of their children.
Besides paying for the treatment of the injured labourers, the DPCL will allow them three-month paid leave.
On the other hand, the district administration and Red Cross announced to provide Rs 20,000 and Rs 10, 000 respectively for cremation of the deceased labourers.
Inconsolable since yesterday, the family members of the deceased had demanded Rs 50 lakh compensation and a job to one member of each of the family.
Taking to mediapersons earlier in the day, the labour minister said, “The District Labour Officer, Labour Commission and the District Collector have been directed to hold meetings with the port authorities and reach an amicable solution on compensating the victims of this tragedy.”
He had also assured an investigation into the matter.
The mishap on Tuesday had triggered tension in the port with labourers setting guard rooms near the gate on fire.
