Malkangiri: Malkangiri police have seized Rs 30 lakh unaccounted cash from a car near Chalanguda, bordering Chhattisgarh, during inspection of vehicles ahead of elections in Odisha.
According to sources, the cops recovered the substantial amount of cash after intercepting the car as it entered the state from Sukma district in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday evening. Two persons travelling in the car were also detained as they failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source of the cash.
An investigation is underway to determine the source and purpose of the seized cash.
Earlier this month, Rs 55 lakh was seized from a car in Sonepur district, so far the highest cash haul in a single operation in the run-up to the simultaneous Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha polls in the state.
Notably, inducements valued at Rs 118.65 crore have been sized in the state between March 1 and April 17. These include Rs 2.7 crore in cash, liquor valued at Rs 18.19 crore, drugs and narcotics worth Rs 43.69 crore, precious metals worth Rs 7.17 crore and freebies and other items worth 47.44 crore.
