Berhampur: In order to further improve the sanitation condition and streamline the system, Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has launched a project with a budget of Rs 29.42 crore.
Under the project, launched on Friday, the city has been divided into five zones for effective sanitation management. The sanitation works in the area have been entrusted to 3 agencies including Pratyush, Safai Abhiyan and PMR Consortium. While zone 1 and 2 would be handled by Pratyush agency, zone 3 by Safai Abhiyan and zone 4 and 5 by PMR Consortium.
The BeMC has also decided to increase the number of garbage collection vehicles from 53 to 132 and sanitation workers from 986 to 1,336. Under the new initiatives, sweeping in commercial and market areas will be done 3 times daily.
The self-help groups (SHG) will be involved in monitoring and supervising waste transportation and segregation from household to transfer station. Ward wise transparency board will be fixed with all important contact details of sanitation agencies and any complaint or issues will be resolved within 24 hours by a sanitation service provider.
The BeMC hs also decided to impose penalty on the provider in case of neglect in timely and satisfactory delivery of sanitation services. Collection of waste even from narrow lanes and by-lanes which are not accessible by door-to-door vehicles has also been planned.
Chandra Sekhar Sahu, Berhampur MP; Ramesh Chandra Chau Patnaik, Member, State Planning Board; Bikram Panda, Berhampur MLA; Sanghamitra Dalei, Berhampur Mayor and others were present during the launch of the project.
