Sarat Pattanayak To Helm Congress In Odisha After 18 Years

Bhubaneswar: Putting an end to all speculations, Congress high command on Monday appointed senior leader Sarat Pattnayak as Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president.

“Congress president has accepted the resignation of Niranjan Patnaik …….. has appointed Sarat Pattnayak as the president of Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect. The party appreciates the contributions of the outgoing OPCC president Niranjan Patnaik,” a press release by the AICC General Secretary said.

Notably, Nirajan had tendered his resignation from the president’s post in May 2019 after the dismal performance of Congress in the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Speaking to the media post appoitment, Sarat said that he would work towards strengthening the party organization. “Together we will fight the elections. Preparations will begin for 2024 elections after the Brajarajnagar bypoll,” he added.

This is his second term as OPCC president. He had earlier served as the state chief from 2001-04.

Sarat was also elected to Lok Sabha from Balangir in the 1990s and served as State Youth Congress president.
