Mumbai: Section 144 has been imposed here on Saturday and Sunday in view of the rising cases of the new COVID variant Omicron. Maharashtra has reported 17 Omicron cases, the highest in any state of the country.
To put a curb on the further spread of the virus, rallies, morchas or processions of people or vehicles have been prohibited in Mumbai. Actions will be initiated in case of violation.
Mumbai Police sources said the decision to impose Section 144 in the city was taken for two reasons.
The first for the rally planned by the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) for which several workers came to the city and party chief Asaduddin Owaisi is also likely to attend. The police have denied permission for the rally in view of the Omicron threat, but AIMIM is still going ahead with it. The second reason is the protests planned by the BJP against Sanjay Raut’s statement.
A total of seven new Omicron cases were reported in Maharashtra on Friday, including a three-year-old.
According to the state health department, three cases were reported from Mumbai and four from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.
Meanwhile, the Omicron tally stands at 32 in India according to the latest update.
