This is too much too soon. First, Mandira Bedi was the target for daring to defy social norms at her husband’s death and now it is actress Shilpa Shetty, whose reputation is being torn to smithereens for the alleged wrongdoings of her husband. The sexist remarks against her on social media are not only uncalled for but also in very bad taste. Some of them are downright insensitive.
Since when have we handed over the ‘Insaaf Ka Tarazu’ to such people?
Why do people think it is their birthright to loosen their tongue when it comes to women? They pay the price for what is deemed immoral in the eyes of society and equally when their spouse is involved in misconduct. Any which way, the venomous arrows pierce her and she is left to wage a lonely battle in a heartlessly cruel society. Is it fair?
From one woman to another, my heart goes out to Shilpa Shetty. No one has the right to point an accusing finger at her till proven otherwise. Let the police do their job. Turning women into witches is an age-old tradition in our society and embarking on a witch-hunt gives sick minds an untold pleasure that is borne out of toxic masculinity. Hanging them from a tree, ostracising them, stoning and shooting them, marrying them off forcibly, stripping them in public, raping them to ‘teach them a lesson’ are just the tip of an iceberg. And where all this is not possible, they are trolled mercilessly. So, if it is not physical torture, it is mental.
As bad luck would have it for the actress, her husband’s arrest has coincided with the release of her comeback film ‘Hungama 2.’ It was released on Friday, the day Kundra’s remand in judicial custody was extended to July 27. Yet, one must give it to the 46-year-old Shilpa’s courage for requesting her fans in an Instagram post, not to let the movie suffer on account of the good and hard work that has gone into making it. Earlier in the day, she had also posted an optimistic note on how she would tide over this challenge like many others before it.
Let us cut some slack to the woman who has entertained us for years. Let us not bring her down from the pedestal where she has worked hard to reach. Let us not rile for the very reasons that we praised her. Shilpa Shetty came to the Hindi film industry from nowhere and matured as an actress doing movies like ‘Dhadkan’ and ‘Life in a Metro.’ Leaving active acting at the peak of her career, she continued to remain alive among the audience and created a new fan base for herself as a yoga enthusiast, a cookery show host and as a judge on a popular reality show on TV.
It is an appeal to the ‘jury’ of netizens, please put a leash on your thoughts, actions and words. For, when a parent is embroiled in the police net for an illegal act, there are also children involved and they suffer for no fault of theirs. When they become a target of attack among their peers on account of their elders, there is no saying how much harm it does to their psyche. It can get tainted for life.
So, all you (un)worthies, please lay off and let the law take its own course. You mind your own business!
